NEWS: Andre Johnson Frustrated After Suffering Setback With Groin Injury
HOUSTON (CBS Houston)
Just a day after celebrating his return to the football field, Texans receiver Andre Johnson suffered a minor setback Sunday morning during the second day of training camp.
Johnson injured his groin while stretching out for a catching during drills within the first 30 minutes of the morning session. Johnson, of course, is coming off the least productive season of his career after missing nine games with two separate hamstring injuries. The 10-year veteran was also held out of OTAs and minicamp this spring after having arthroscopic knee surgery.
“It’s very frustrating but it happens,” said Johnson, who expects to be out the next five days after an MRI revealed only a minor strain to his groin. “I wish I had some control over but unfortunately I don’t. I’m just going to keep working and try to get better.”
Johnson said he felt tightness in his groin after stretching out to make the catch. Johnson had wanted to continue but the team trainers and doctors took the cautious approach and immediately removed him from the practice field.
“It just got tight,” Johnson said.”I guess after everything I’ve been through last season they wanted me to get an MRI to make sure it wasn’t worse than what it was.”
Texans coach Gary Kubiak seemed optimistic that Johnson will make a quick recovery but there was also a sense of sorrow because of how hard Johnson has worked to be back on the practice field for the start of training camp only to suffer a quick setback.
“Obviously, Andre has worked so dang hard to get back on the field full-speed, so it’s disappointing,” Kubiak said.”I don’t think we’re staring at anything significant. We’ll let you guys know more this afternoon.”
In other injury news, Kubiak also confirmed that inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton suffered a setback while working to rehabilitate his left quad injury that forced him to miss all of last season. Kubiak had hoped to move Sharpton, who is competing with Brady James for the starting inside spot, onto the active roster soon.
But after he was helped off the practice field during Sunday’s afternoon practice after being pushed a little hard it seems uncertain when he will be ready to join his teammates at practice.
